Sallaberry Brothers
Bernard and Pascal Sallaberry, born in Helette, Basses-Pyrénées, France, on September 18, 1882, and April 13, 1884, respectively, are the sons of Pierre and Catherine Sallaberry. Raised as farmer folk, both brothers attended local schools, learned farming, and served in the Forty-ninth Infantry of the French army before seeking opportunities in the United States. Bernard migrated to Los Angeles in July 1906, and Pascal joined him the following year to begin their American ranching careers. They partnered with G. Oxarat to lease a ranch at Puente for over two years, cultivating vegetables, grain, and alfalfa. Moving to Palms, they leased sixty-one acres, established a dairy herd of thirty-five cows, and eventually relocated their operations to Westminster.
After Bernard worked on a ranch in Merced until 1917, the brothers reunited in Fresno County to lease the 240 acre Matias Erro place at Rolinda. On this property, which is irrigated by both a ditch and two pumping plants, they successfully engaged in general farming and dairying. They rapidly improved the land for alfalfa and stock farming, managing about 100 head of cattle, including seventy milk cows. Known as energetic, reliable, and progressive young men, they have earned the respect of their community. Politically, both Bernard and Pascal are firm believers in the principles of the Republican party.
