Rudolph, Henry, Jr.
Henry Rudolph, Jr., born in Russia on November 18, 1873, became a highly successful scientific vineyardist in Fresno, California, after arriving in the region in the early 1890s. The son of grain-farmer Henry Rudolph and Catherine Sieler, he was educated in public schools and worked on a farm until the age of seventeen, when he departed Saratof for the United States. He was the first of his siblings to arrive in Fresno, where he immediately secured agricultural work along Shields Avenue. Over the years, he steadily acquired and improved local properties, including a twenty-acre plot on Walnut and North Avenues and a forty-acre peach orchard and Sultana vineyard in the Arizona Colony.
Following a brief business venture operating the Steitz and Rudolph grocery on F Street with partner H. P. Steitz, Henry returned to agriculture in 1914 by purchasing a sixty-acre property in Vinland. Located at Madera and Dakota Avenues, this ranch became a highly productive enterprise where he cultivated Thompson seedless vines and peaches. His professional success led to active participation in local agricultural cooperatives, specifically the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc. He was married in Fresno to Katie Schwanenland, with whom he raised five children named Emma, Henry L., William, Carl, and Freda.
