Rowell, Dr. Chester
Dr. Chester Rowell, born in New Hampshire in 1844 and raised in Illinois, became one of the most universally esteemed pioneers in Fresno County, California, after arriving in 1874. A graduate of the medical department of the University of the Pacific, he served the community as a self-sacrificing country physician who routinely ignored personal reward to treat patients across vast distances. Beyond his medical practice, he made a lasting historical impact by establishing a weekly publication in 1878 that grew into a leading state newspaper and by acting as a foundational leader for the local Republican party. His early standing was cemented by his historic election in 1879 as the first Republican ever chosen for office in the county, serving as a state senator until 1883 and later winning reelection in 1898 and 1902.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Rowell held numerous influential positions, including serving as a regent of the state university from 1891 until his death and working as a member of the state board of health. He was deeply active in national politics as a delegate to multiple Republican national conventions and eventually served a three-year term as the mayor of Fresno starting in 1909. In addition to his civic roles, he was a key supporter of the Unitarian Church, financing its house of worship, and served as president of the People’s Savings Bank. Following his death, admiring friends subscribed ten thousand dollars to erect a monument in his memory in the county courthouse park to honor his legacy as a dedicated physician, friend, and citizen.
