Rowell, Chester Harvey
Chester Harvey Rowell, born in Bloomington, Illinois, on November 1, 1867, was a highly influential editor, educator, and political leader who became the best-known citizen of Fresno, California. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he spent three years in Washington, D. C., working as a clerk for the House of Representatives committee on elections and compiling volumes of contested election cases published by Congress. He subsequently traveled and studied in Europe at the German universities of Halle and Berlin, as well as in Rome and Paris, before returning to teach college courses and high school in Fresno. In 1898, he assumed the editorial management of the Fresno Republican, later becoming its principal owner and president after the passing of his uncle, Dr. Chester Rowell, in 1912.
Throughout his career in California, Rowell made major contributions to local and national politics, notably organizing the reform-minded Lincoln-Roosevelt Republican League and managing Hiram W. Johnson successful gubernatorial campaign. His extensive political involvement included serving on the Republican and Progressive state committees, drafting national party platforms as a delegate in 1912, and acting as a member of the National Campaign Committee during the 1916 Hughes campaign. Locally, he served on the Fresno Board of Education, worked as a library trustee to secure a thirty thousand dollar Carnegie grant, and was appointed as a regent of the University of California. Married to Myrtle Marie Lingle on August 1, 1897, with whom he had three children named Cora W., Barbara, and Jonathan, his diverse public service solidified his legacy as a foundational builder of the state.
