Rose, Anthony G.
Anthony G. Rose was reared and educated in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, before traveling with his parents to San Mateo County, California, via the Isthmus of Panama in 1870. He completed his schooling at the high school and military academy in San Leandro, and in 1889, he began apprenticing in the machinist trade in San Francisco. Coming from a family of seafaring men, he worked as a licensed Marine Engineer on San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River before shifting to stationary engineering. A machinery repair trip to Fresno in 1892 convinced him to settle permanently in the area, where he joined the James Porteous Company machine shop.
Later in 1892, Mr. Rose became the chief engineer for the Fresno Gas and Electric Company before joining the San Joaquin Light and Power Company and the Fresno City Water Company. He served as chief engineer of the water company starting in July 1894, eventually managing their machine shop, garages, fifty men, and 165 automobiles across ten counties. In his personal life, he married California native Mary Pimental, with whom he had three children named Ida, Jessie C., and Marie. He also engaged in local real estate by building three houses, operated 145 acres of rented alfalfa land for three years, and maintained active memberships in several fraternal and engineering organizations.
