Roessler, Fred M.
Fred M. Roessler, born in St. Martin, Rheinish Bavaria, Germany, on August 24, 1857, was a dedicated viticulturist who contributed greatly to the development of Fresno County, California. As a boy, he learned the care and pruning of vines under his father, George Roessler, before leaving home in 1873 to study navigation at a nautical school ship in New York City. After sailing around the world and visiting various ports in the Orient, his interest in California grapes led him to San Francisco in July 1874. He initially worked on a grain ranch in Monterey County and later spent time working on railroad construction in Mexico before returning to California to find affordable land.
In the fall of 1879, after exploring other regions, Mr. Roessler moved to Fresno County and purchased a forty-acre improved plot for 1,600 dollars, which became the nucleus of his agricultural enterprise. Through continuous expansion, he grew his property to 180 acres of wine grapes and established a large commercial winery with a capacity of 500,000 gallons. He married Sina Johnson on May 3, 1890, and together they raised three living children—Elsie, George, and Alfred—along with an adopted son named Ludvig. A prominent community figure, he belonged to multiple Masonic organizations, supported the Republican platform, and actively contributed to the Fresno Chamber of Commerce.
