Rodrigues, Frank V.
Frank V. Rodrigues, born on the Island of Pico in the Azores on December 24, 1861, was a self-made immigrant who became a successful rancher in Fresno County, California. At sixteen years old, he crossed the ocean and traveled across the continent to find a more promising future in the San Joaquin Valley. Although he wanted to attend school, his circumstances required him to work out by the month on local farms in Kings and Fresno counties for many years. Through hard work and frugal living, he mastered farming techniques and acquired the practical business methods of the American West. After marrying Mary Enos in Fresno County, he rented land for several years to build up his capital.
In 1907, Mr. Rodrigues purchased a forty-acre ranch located five and one-half miles northeast of Kingsburg and developed it into a highly cultivated property. He built a fine bungalow, good barns, and a tank house, while dedicating the fields to high-grade peaches and raisins. As a successful raisin grower, he protected his personal business interests and actively supported the California Associated Raisin Company as a member. The couple raised eight surviving children named Minnie, Frank, Annie, Tony, Joe, Rosa, Lena, and Clarence, and ensured they received the educational opportunities he lacked. His life reflects the integrity and industrious spirit of the early immigrant entrepreneurs who drove the agricultural expansion of California.
