Robinson, Raymond D.
Raymond D. Robinson, born in Chenango County, New York, on May 6, 1869, became a pioneering authority in the fruit-packing industry with over thirty years of experience. He moved to Missouri with his parents at age ten, receiving his education in public schools and at a college in Marionville before arriving in Riverside, California, on September 30, 1887. He immediately secured employment with the Griffin-Skelly Company, which later became the California Packing Corporation, marking the start of a highly dedicated career. His early seasons were spent mastering the trade in Fresno, where his implementation of innovative packing methods quickly earned him a permanent residence and a promotion to superintendent.
By 1917, he became the plant manager under the merged corporation, and his long service was celebrated by the company with the gift of an engraved gold watch. In Fresno, he married Indiana native Jennie M. Bevefel, and together they raised four children named Fay, Marjorie, Halbert, and Doris. As a self-made businessman, he achieved great respect among local growers and distributors while contributing liberally to the development of the San Joaquin Valley. His industrial leadership and persistent purpose established his historical significance as a foundational figure in the California fruit shipping industry.
