Rathgeber, Philipp
Philipp Rathgeber, born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, on November 14, 1857, was a successful cattleman and large landowner who became a valuable addition to Fresno County, California. In 1870, he emigrated to America with his parents, Christian and Barbara Rathgeber, and his three siblings, living in New York City and St. Louis before settling in Yankton, South Dakota, in 1872. As a young man, Philipp worked on the family farm and broke the prairie land with oxen and horses for his father, who was in poor health. Following his marriage in 1882 to Mary Ruben, he began farming on his own in Bon Homme County and later established a prosperous 750-acre cattle homestead on the Cheyenne River near Rapid City. The couple raised five children, named Emma, Pearl, Walter, Lucy, and Cassius, during their time in South Dakota.
In May 1918, seeking a milder climate due to failing health, Philipp relocated to Fresno County, California, and purchased the forty-acre I. N. Zook ranch to raise peaches, figs, and raisin grapes. Though he sold this property in February 1919, he successfully regained his health while enjoying the warm California sunshine far away from South Dakota’s severe winter blizzards. Throughout his career, his strong business acumen allowed him to build acquaintances with prominent South Dakota political figures, including Hon. Bartlett Tripp, Ex-Governor Andrew E. Lee, Ex-Senator Frank Pettigrew, and Senator Johnson. His journey from an industrious German immigrant to a prosperous Western rancher represents a remarkable story of adaptability and determination.
