Pugh, John Sallee
John Sallee Pugh was born near Pennington, Sutter County, California, in 1873, as the son of pioneer John M. Pugh. After growing up in Stonyford and moving to Fresno County on June 19, 1888, he completed his education at Orange Center and the Oakland Polytechnic business course. He initially worked alongside his family on a 140-acre ranch in Kutner Colony before venturing out to acquire his own agricultural properties.
Eventually settling in the Granville district, Pugh purchased forty acres in 1915 and added an adjoining forty acres in 1918 to build an eighty-acre ranch dedicated to vineyards and alfalfa on Ventura Avenue. In addition to operating his own acreage, he leased a separate eighty-acre tract eleven and a half miles east of Fresno. Outside of his viticulture work, he supported the California Associated Raisin Company, aligned with the Democratic party, and held membership in Selma Lodge No. 277, F. & A. M.
