Poytress, J. A.
J. A. Poytress was born in Gloucester, England, on March 10, 1871, to parents John Poytress and Mary Ann Cooper. After working on local farms from the age of ten to support his family, he immigrated to Fresno County, California, in June 1891 and began farming in Easton. In September 1893, he married his first wife, Mary Wells, with whom he had a daughter named Eleanor Mary, before her passing in 1908.
In Fresno County, J. A. built an eighty-five-acre home vineyard on West Avenue and Lincoln, alongside a 320-acre dairy ranch and a sixty-acre property at Caruthers. He later married Annie Hopkins, with whom he had five children: Phyllis, Ethel, Annie Jane, Dorothy Dean, and Roderick. A leader in community and agricultural organizations, he served as a director of the Danish Creamery Association and the Fresno County Farm Bureau, while holding long-standing trustee roles for the local schools and the Easton Methodist Episcopal Church.
