Powers, Aaron Hubbard
Aaron Hubbard Powers, a native of New Hampshire, arrived in California via Cape Horn during the 1849 Gold Rush and conducted business in Sacramento for twenty years before buying 250 acres near Centerville, Fresno County, in 1887. He married London native Emma Louisa Sweasy, developed an extensive orchard and vineyard, and later taken his son Lucius into full partnership in 1898 to manage the expanding ranch. Before his death in Venice, Italy, on April 17, 1907, during a world tour, the pioneer patriarch established a lasting horticultural legacy and raised seven surviving children on their Centerville property.
His son, Lucius Powers, born in Sacramento on January 11, 1872, eventually expanded the family holdings into the 370-acre Powers Orchard and Vineyard Company, serving as its president before buying out his siblings to become sole owner in 1915. A prominent fruit shipper and vice president of the Pioneer Fruit Company, he also founded the L. Powers Fruit Company, co-organized the Commercial Bank of Sanger, and acquired prime vineyard acreage throughout Fresno County. Married to Abbie Viau on July 3, 1900, with whom he had four children, Lucius became a leading business figure, civic leader, and fraternal member in Fresno.
