Phillips, Charles E., D.D.S.
Dr. Charles E. Phillips was born on July 26, 1878, in Garrard County, Kentucky, and received his early education in Lancaster. After studying dentistry at both the Louisville Dental College and the Cincinnati Dental College, he gained initial experience assisting in dental offices in Kentucky and Ohio. Moving to California on April 29, 1902, he assisted Dr. B. B. Cory in Fresno for four years before passing the state board examination in 1907 to establish his own successful practice, eventually operating out of the Rowell Building.
Beyond his private practice, Dr. Phillips became a charter member of the X-ray Dental Association of Fresno and an associate member of the Southern California Dental Association. He was an active athlete who earned a gold medal leading Fresno Y.M.C.A. events, a former owner of a local peach orchard, and a participant in several civic and fraternal groups, including the Chamber of Commerce and the Elks. Married to Verna E. Stickles, a native of Oklahoma, he settled in Fresno as a prominent community member and raised one daughter, Dorothy Allene.
