Peterson, Carl Gustaf
Carl Gustaf Peterson was born on April 16, 1861, in Varmland, Sweden, to parents Peter Erickson and Mathilda C. Berg. After immigrating to the United States in 1881, he spent seven years working in Michigan iron mines before moving to Kingsburg, California, in 1888 to pursue carpentry, brickmaking, and early agricultural experiments. He later spent eleven years successfully operating and leasing gold and silver mines in Idaho Springs, Colorado, where he married Amanda Borg on June 19, 1897, and started a family.
Returning permanently to Fresno County in February 1909, Peterson acquired property in the Vinland colony and developed a thirty-acre ranch featuring Thompson seedless grapes and apricot trees while continuing his work as a building contractor. Alongside his farming and trade endeavors, he raised two children, Adeline and Torgny, with his wife. Active in community and religious life, he served as a trustee, deacon, and Sunday School superintendent for the Swedish Lutheran Church at Vinland.
