Petersen, Louis
Louis Petersen was born on February 27, 1856, in Seland, Denmark, where he learned the trade of painter before immigrating to America in 1881. After working in Chicago and homesteading in South Dakota, he arrived in California during the boom period, eventually settling in Fresno in 1889 after brief stops in San Diego and Ventura County. He established himself as a successful painting contractor in 1903, working on notable local properties such as the Brix Block, the Einstein residence, and the Kern-Kay Hotel while maintaining membership in the Painters Union of Fresno.
Beyond his contracting career, Petersen invested in local real estate, improving raw land near Selma as well as owning flat buildings and residential lots in Fresno. He actively participated in civic and cultural organizations, including serving at one time as treasurer for the Danish Brotherhood. Married with property centered around his home place on Seventh Street, he built a reputation as a prominent self-made pioneer contractor in Central California.
