Pedersen, Axel
Axel Pedersen was born on December 26, 1887, near Ribe, Jylland, Denmark, to parents Niels Pedersen and Karen Hansen. Reared on his family’s Danish farm, he immigrated to the United States in March 1904 at age seventeen, settling directly in Fresno County, California. After four years of general ranch work, he entered viticulture in 1913 by purchasing a forty-acre McKinley Avenue property with his brother Anton, eventually buying out his brother’s share in 1917 to specialize independently in Muscat grapes and peaches.
In 1914, Pedersen married Fresno County native Maren Hansen, the daughter of early local settler and former blacksmith Jacob Hansen. The couple raised two sons, Robert and Glenn, while Pedersen expanded his civic and professional leadership within the community. In addition to serving as secretary and ex-president of Dania Society No. 5, he actively supported the local fruit industry through his memberships in the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
