Pearce, Martin W.
Martin W. Pearce was born in Ontario, Canada, on October 7, 1867, and immigrated to the United States in 1887 before settling in Fresno County, California, in the spring of 1888. After working on the T. C. White ranch, he purchased forty acres of raw land in the Garfield district near Clovis in 1890, where he developed a highly productive Muscat vineyard and resided for twenty-two years. Over his agricultural career, he successfully operated multiple properties, including a 440-acre grain and cattle ranch in the Garfield district, as well as ranches in the Perrin Colony No. 2 and Niece Colony.
Having established himself as an authority on local land values and agriculture, Pearce retired from active farming to reside at 1403 San Pablo Avenue in Fresno while serving as a director for the First National Bank of Clovis. On March 18, 1900, he married Fresno County native Johnnie Elizabeth Howard in the Garfield district, and together they raised two children, Zella and Thomas. Today, the family remains active in the local community, with Mrs. Pearce belonging to the Parlor Lecture Club of Fresno and both children attending the Fresno Normal Training School.
