Peak, John H.
John H. Peak was born on April 28, 1867, in Delaware County, New York, to Eleazer Peake and Mary Holmes. Following his mother’s death and his family’s relocation to Cass County, Nebraska, in 1870, he overcame a limited early education by studying through correspondence and completing a carpentry apprenticeship in Webster County. After moving to California in December 1890, he worked as a farm hand, nursery worker, and blacksmith in Selma, eventually establishing himself over six years as the area’s leading building contractor.
Throughout his contracting career, Peak constructed over one hundred residences around Selma, alongside major projects such as the Selma Hotel, the First Methodist Episcopal Church, and extensive industrial facilities for Libby, McNeill & Libby. Transitioning his business focus toward the automotive industry, he established Peak’s Garage under the firm name J. H. Peak & Sons at 1941-43 West Front Street in Selma. Married to Cora F. Wells, Peak raised seven children—Elsie, George W., Ernest, Margaret, Melvin, Gertrude, and Elbert—while actively participating in the Knights of Pythias and Woodmen of the World.
