Olson, Albert Julius
Albert Julius Olson was born in San Francisco on April 16, 1877, to Swedish immigrants Gustav Olson and Jennie Marie Hanson. Brought to Fresno County as an infant in 1878, he grew up in the Scandinavian Colony, where his father worked as a master cooper for major wineries and established a family vineyard. Following his education in local schools, Albert mastered viticulture and took charge of the family vineyard upon his father’s death in 1893, eventually expanding it alongside his brother Charles O. to 140 acres and operating their own winery until selling the business in 1914.
That same year, Olson relocated to his twenty-acre ranch in the Helm Colony, where he built a residence and cultivated Thompson, Sultana, Malaga, and wine grapes, in addition to owning twenty acres in the National Colony. Married in Fresno to Carrie Louise Dauner, daughter of San Francisco pioneer Frederick A. Dauner, he raised two children, August Albert and Dorothy May. A Republican and advocate for protectionism, Olson actively supported local industry as a member of the California Associated Raisin Company while managing his agricultural holdings.
