Nutting, W. R.
William Rufus Nutting was born on September 1, 1850, in Hudson, Summit County, Ohio, to parents Rufus Nutting and Sarah Hubbard Nutting. Raised with both agricultural and mechanical training on his family farm, he graduated from the first State Normal School of Vermont in 1868 before gaining extensive organizational experience managing reformatory schools across New England. Transitioning to business in 1877, he established the Boston Electric Company, co-invented the widely adopted nickel-plated push-button light switch plate and bead pull-chain, and later introduced the Herdic carriage transit system across Massachusetts.
Relocating to California with his family in October 1884, Nutting settled in Berkeley and initially managed state operations for the Union Mutual Life Insurance Company. Drawing on his experience in New England and the Midwest, he promoted farm mortgage loan systems to foster regional development across California. Throughout his dynamic career, Nutting earned a reputation as a visionary entrepreneur and community organizer whose innovative ventures in electricity, public transit, and agriculture left a lasting impact on public life.
