Niswander, J. F.
J. F. Niswander was born in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, in November 1871 to Isaac Benjamin Niswander and Barbara Frank. After relocating to Fresno, California, in 1889, he worked in grain fields before returning to Virginia to complete a three-year course at Bridgewater College. He returned to Fresno in 1897, eventually managing and purchasing the Malaga Cooperative Packing Association, expanding operations with a plant at Del Rey, and developing substantial agricultural land holdings across Fresno and Madera counties.
Niswander played a pivotal role in organizing the California Peach Growers, Inc. in 1915, serving as its vice president and general manager while overseeing 26 packing plants and 6,500 member producers nationwide and internationally. On June 19, 1901, he married Eula P. Shipp in Fresno, and together they raised four children: Roy, Edna, Horace, and Virginia. Active in civic and fraternity circles, he contributed to local affairs through the Democratic party, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Woodmen of the World, and St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal Church South.
