Nielsen, Hans Jorgen
Hans Jorgen Nielsen was born at Jylland, Denmark, on March 21, 1860, and was educated in the Danish public schools before immigrating to America. Motivated by news of Central California and the presence of two uncles in the tailoring trade in Fresno, he landed in Boston and arrived in Fresno County on March 3, 1882. He initially worked for four years on the ranch of I. W. Byington and spent subsequent years improving and selling properties in the Scandinavian Colony, including four years managing land for J. M. Shannon.
In 1893, Hans acquired thirty acres of undeveloped land one mile south of Del Rey, which he transformed into a highly productive ranch with Thompson Seedless, sultana, and muscat grapes, alongside alfalfa and an orchard. He married Louisa Nielsen in 1890, and together they raised four children: Maren Christine, Maria Louisa, Henry F., and Theodore N. Active as an ex-president of the Danish Brotherhood and a devoted member of the Danish Lutheran Church, he maintained a progressive stance in local politics while remaining a proud American citizen.
