Nicklason, John August
John August Nicklason was born on January 21, 1868, in Småland, Sweden, to Nicholas J. Peterson and Magdalena Johanson, before immigrating with his family to Clay County, Minnesota, in 1886. After working as a wheat farmer in Minnesota, he married Hilda Christene Johansen on December 27, 1895, and later relocated to Fresno County, California, in January 1905. He purchased and developed raw land on Madera and Shaw Avenues, establishing a twenty-acre ranch with alfalfa, peaches, and Thompson seedless grapes while becoming a stockholder in both the California Peach Growers, Inc. and the California Associated Raisin Company.
A committed community leader, Nicklason helped organize the congregation and build the Swedish Lutheran Church at Vinland, where he served as a deacon, while also actively supporting the Republican party. He and his wife raised eight children—Ruth, Alma, Gerdar, Nora, Eldor, Anna, Edwin, and Carl—with their family maintaining deep ties to the Kerman and Vinland areas. Through his agricultural developments and civic involvement, Nicklason remained a prominent pioneer figure in Central California’s growth.
