Musick, Jasper Newton
Jasper N. Musick was born as the sixth of fifteen children near Jefferson City, Missouri, and crossed the plains by ox team and horse to reach California in the fall of 1850. After mining for six years in Amador County and participating in local Indian skirmishes in Mariposa County, he settled in Millerton to run a freighting team between Stockton and the mines. Over the following decades, he established a successful stock business on Dry Creek with J. G. Simpson, transitioned into sheep raising and fruit growing at Letcher, and eventually retired to Fresno in 1892 before passing away at age eighty-five on June 4, 1918.
Musick played a pivotal role in local governance and education, serving two terms as a Fresno County supervisor, chairing the board, and championing the successful effort to relocate the county seat. In 1872, he helped found and serve as treasurer for the Dry Creek Academy, later acting as a long-time school district trustee for the institution. He was married twice, first to Rebecca Richards, with whom he had five children, and later in December 1878 to Nancy J. Messersmith, leaving behind a legacy as one of Fresno County’s most widely known early pioneers.
