Murphy, John R.
John R. Murphy was born on March 21, 1865, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Irish native James Murphy and his wife Bridget Murphy, who later passed away in 1896 and 1893, respectively. Brought west as a child, he was educated in the public schools of Novato, Marin County, California, and took on the responsibility of supporting, rearing, and educating a family of eight upon reaching his majority. He initially engaged in the dairying business before selling his interests in 1893 to work for the Western Refrigerating Company in Petaluma, later joining the Danish Creamery in Fresno. In November 1896, he married Mary Early in Petaluma, the daughter of 1852 pioneer James Early, and the couple had one daughter named Mary Alice Murphy.
Beyond his early dairy work, Mr. Murphy built a notable career in public service as an active Republican and prominent leader within the Commercial Club. On July 1, 1909, Governor James Norris Gillett appointed him as State Dairy Commissioner, a position he continued to hold due to his reliable management. Religiously, he and his family were devoted members of the Catholic Church. Through his professional achievements in Petaluma and Fresno, he became recognized as one of the most experienced and able dairymen in the state of California.
