Mouren, Joseph
Joseph Mouren was born in St. Bonnet, near Gap, Hautes-Alpes, France, on February 11, 1849, to Pierre Mouren and Rose Julian. After immigrating to San Francisco in March 1869, he worked as a stock-buyer traveling across California purchasing sheep. Seeing great potential in Fresno County, he eventually chose Huron as his permanent location, becoming the town oldest settler and establishing a successful hotel, livery stable, and sheep-growing enterprise.
Over time, Joseph expanded his holdings to approximately 4,000 acres in the valley devoted to raising grain, cattle, and horses. Married in San Francisco on February 3, 1889, to Angela Pelleisson of St. Bonnet, France, the couple raised five children: Agnes, Edmond, Angele, Joseph Jr., and Marguerite. Civically active, Joseph served as a director for the Growers National Bank of Fresno, held leadership roles in local fraternal lodges, and served fifteen years as a trustee for the Huron school district.
