Morgan, Peter M.
Peter M. Morgan was born in Shelby County, Ohio, on May 7, 1844, to Monfort Morgan and Rebecca Mulford. In August 1862, he enlisted in Company I of the 118th Ohio Volunteers, taking part in major Civil War engagements across Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina before his honorable discharge in July 1865. Following the war, he married Mary Catherine Mathis in 1868, farming and running various business enterprises across Kansas and Oklahoma before Mrs. Morgan passed away in Newton, Kansas, in 1890.
In 1906, Peter moved to California and purchased a forty-acre vineyard in the Garfield District near Fresno, which he improved with the help of his son, Harry C. Morgan. Outside of his agricultural pursuits, he was active in public life, serving as mayor, justice of the peace, and school trustee in Sedgwick City, Kansas. He also remained deeply involved in veteran and fraternal groups in Fresno County, serving as Commander of Atlanta Post, G. A. R., and Commander of the San Joaquin Valley Veterans Association.
