Miles, Elbridge
Elbridge Miles Jr. was born on January 8, 1860, in Placer County, California, to pioneer parents E. Miles, Sr., and Mary A. Waldren Miles, who had traveled to California during the Gold Rush era via Cape Horn and Panama, respectively. Reared in Oakland and San Luis Obispo County, young Elbridge completed his education at an Oakland business college before embarking on a career in public service and agriculture, which included serving four years as deputy assessor in San Luis Obispo. Moving to Fresno County in 1886, he spent over two decades managing grain warehouses in Traver and Reedley for J. S. Jones, while also serving the region as a dedicated deputy sheriff under Sheriff Jay Scott.
On October 18, 1891, Elbridge married Vallejo native Belle Apperson, the daughter of early California pioneer and prominent Fresno County undertaker William L. Apperson and his wife, Elizabeth Rucker Apperson. In 1905, Miles purchased twenty acres of barren stubble land three miles east of Reedley, personally transforming it into a flourishing ranch with vines, trees, buildings, and a well, while actively investing in both the California Associated Raisin Company and Peach Growers, Inc. Though the couple had no biological children, they generously raised Elbridge’s orphaned nephew and niece, Dial and Velma, alongside participating in local civic life, Republican politics, and fraternal organizations like the Odd Fellows, Rebekahs, and Woodmen of the World.
