McLennan, H. M.
Born in the East, H. M. McLennan arrived in California in 1878, completing his education in Quincy, Plumas County, before traveling to Arizona during the 1879 Tombstone silver boom to prospect and work in quartz mills. Returning to California in 1886, he settled in Fresno County and acquired forty acres of raw land two miles west of Fresno, where he built a residence, cleared roads, and dug a mile-and-a-half irrigation ditch connecting to the Houghton Canal. He subsequently developed the property into a flourishing Muscat vineyard, weathering early market fluctuations and actively joining the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
In addition to his viticultural operations, McLennan rendered extensive public service to Fresno County, serving as road overseer for his district beginning in 1907 and as a trustee of the Madison School District for fourteen years. Married in Tombstone to Agnes J. Frazier, with whom he shared active membership in the Woodmen of the World, McLennan aligned nationally with the Democratic Party while maintaining a non-partisan approach to local civic improvements.
