McCarty, Emanuel Marion
Born in Daviess County, Missouri, in 1861, Emanuel Marion McCarty was the eldest child of Civil War veteran William McCarty and Eliza Jane (Ninemires) McCarty. Raised in Missouri and Illinois, he married Permelia Crume in Gentry County, Missouri, in 1885, where they initially operated a sixty-acre grain and livestock farm. Facing persistent health issues, McCarty spent several years relocating across Kansas, Texas, and Colorado in search of a favorable climate before discovering Fresno County.
In 1911, McCarty relocated his family to California, purchasing a forty-acre tract of undeveloped land three miles east of Kerman on California Avenue. He and his wife leveled and improved the property, establishing a successful dairy operation and alfalfa farm. The parents of seven children—Myrtle, Harvey, William, Jesse Elwood (a World War I veteran), Estella, Sallie, and Marion Monroe—the McCartys were active members of the Baptist Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Royal Neighbors.
