Maxwell, John Franklin
John Franklin Maxwell was born on February 16, 1867, in St. George, Tucker County, West Virginia, to a prominent family with deep roots in Virginia. His father, Rufus, worked as a surveyor and mill owner, while his mother, Sarah Jane Bonnefield, descended from ancestors who owned farmland where Washington, D.C. was later built. Maxwell grew up alongside nine siblings, attending Weston Academy and St. George Academy before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Indiana State Normal at Valparaiso in 1889. Following his graduation, he completed a year of specialized art coursework before relocating to Fresno, California, where he initially worked as a teacher and a newspaper reporter for the Fresno Expositor.
After practicing photography in Indiana and West Virginia, Maxwell returned to Fresno in 1896 to establish a permanent studio, eventually partnering with A. C. Mudge in 1898 to form Maxwell & Mudge. As the oldest practicing photographer in the city, he built a strong professional reputation alongside his involvement in local viticulture and horticulture on his fifteen-acre property. His personal life included his first marriage to Iona V. Piper, with whom he had five children prior to her passing in 1904, and his second marriage to Ida Phillips in 1906, with whom he had four additional children. In addition to his business, he remained active in his community as the treasurer of Central California Lodge No. 343 I. O. O. F. and held long-standing memberships in the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, the Fraternal Brotherhood, and the Photographers Association of America.
