Mathiesen, Rasmus
Rasmus Mathiesen was born on July 6, 1862, in Aabenraa, Slesvig, Denmark, to parents Christian and Christina Mathiesen. To escape Prussian military oppression, he went to Denmark at age seventeen before immigrating to California, arriving in San Francisco on April 19, 1885. After working in Alameda and relocating to Fresno County in 1887, he purchased an eighty-acre stubble-field north of Sanger in 1894, which he transformed into a productive ranch growing raisins, peaches, alfalfa, and grain.
In Fresno on September 6, 1892, Mathiesen married Karen Marie Johansen, with whom he raised two children, Christina and Christian, as well as Ella Hansen. Beyond ranching, he supported the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc., while also serving twelve years as clerk of the Fairview school district. Fraternally and civically active, he held leadership roles in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and belonged to the Danish Lutheran Church in Central Colony alongside his family.
