Marshall, John B.
Born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, in 1845, John B. Marshall was raised on a farm and trained as a blacksmith. As a young man, he worked on the construction of the Lehigh Valley Railroad before moving westward in 1878 to perform railroad blacksmithing across Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Colorado for the Santa Fe Railway. After briefly returning to agricultural and railroad work in New Jersey, he permanently relocated to California on July 25, 1892, settling in Fresno County.
Over a twenty-five-year period in Fresno County, Marshall actively bought, improved, and traded extensive agricultural and suburban real estate, including grain acreage on the West Side and properties in Sanger, Clovis, East Richmond, and Fresno. Among his holdings was a half-section West Side ranch that he farmed to grain for several years, alongside multiple residential lots across the city of Fresno. Retiring to his residence on Echo Avenue in Fresno, Marshall was widely regarded as a successful real estate developer and dedicated civic booster.
