MacDonald, Rev. G. R. Edward
Born in St. Andrews East, Quebec, in 1877, Rev. G. R. Edward MacDonald was the son of Samuel and Emily Elizabeth (Roberts) MacDonald. Raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, he graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1898 and Kings Theological College in 1899. Ordained as a priest in 1901 by Bishop Kingdon, he served various Canadian pastorates—including curacies at Bathurst and Trinity Church in St. John—before moving to California in 1906 to become rector of the Church of the Savior in Hanford.
In April 1912, MacDonald was called to Fresno as Dean and Rector of St. James Episcopal Pro-Cathedral, where he provided spiritual leadership to both the parish and the expanding city. Beyond his cathedral duties, he served as president of the Council of Advice and secretary of the Missionary Commission for the San Joaquin Episcopal Diocese, while also holding an appointment from the board of supervisors on the Fresno County Department of Public Welfare. Married in 1902 to Lilla Clifton Tabor, with whom he had two children (Lilla Elyne and Charles Ranald), MacDonald was widely respected throughout the county for his broad-minded civic and religious service.
