Lindsay, E. W.
Born in Halifax County, Nova Scotia, in 1861, E. W. Lindsay was the son of Alexander and Charlotte (Guild) Lindsay. He received his early education in Canadian country schools, completed his training at the Truro Normal School and Pictou Academy, and taught for four years in Canada before relocating to California in 1888. Settling in Fresno, Lindsay quickly resumed his teaching career in the city’s public school system, establishing a reputation for educational leadership.
In January 1907, Lindsay assumed the office of Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, serving three consecutive terms until declining to seek re-election in 1919. During his twelve-year tenure, he oversaw substantial growth and modernization across the district, expanding the daily student attendance from 8,150 to over 15,000, increasing the number of high schools, and expanding the teaching staff from 287 to 541 instructors. Following his retirement from public office, Lindsay joined the faculty of the Fresno State Normal School. Married in 1894 to Rebecca L. Fader, Lindsay was an active steward and Sunday School superintendent at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, a director of the YMCA, a Democrat in national politics, and a fraternal member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, and Woodmen of the World.
