Lillis, S. C.
Recognized as one of the last of the early land barons of California, S. C. Lillis established extensive agricultural and real estate holdings across the Central Valley and Coast Range during his lifetime. Following his death in Oakland in early 1917, the distribution of his estate was formalized through a decree from the San Francisco Superior Court in January 1918, transferring his landed possessions in equal shares to his widow and his only daughter, Helen C. Lillis, a cashier at the First National Bank in Hanford.
At the time of his death, Lillis’s property portfolio comprised over 67,000 acres across three California counties. His primary real estate holdings were concentrated in Fresno County, where he owned 41,966.82 acres of grazing land outright, alongside a half-interest in a 15,946.47-acre tract and a twenty percent interest in 4,937.97 acres. His remaining landholdings included an interest in 3,831.31 acres in Kings County and 480 acres in San Benito County, underscoring his position as a major regional landholder.
