Leoni, Camillo R.
Camillo R. Leoni was born in Cerentino, Canton Ticino, Switzerland, on November 8, 1874, to parents John Leoni and Madaline Pedrazzi. He immigrated to Marin County, California, in 1888 to join his older brother James before relocating to Fresno County a year later. After five years of working for local ranches like J. W. Downing’s place, he saved enough capital to purchase his first 160 acres of land.
In Fresno County, Camillo developed a successful agricultural career while overcoming severe floodwaters and cattle diseases on his property near Burrel and Lanare. He married Zelina Leoni in Fresno, and together they raised four children named Lillian, Henry, Milo, and Roy. As a prominent Swiss-American rancher and dairyman, he expanded his holdings to 260 acres and helped organize the First National Bank of Riverdale as an active stockholder.
