Langescheid, Carl
Carl Langescheid was born near Breckerfeld, Westphalia, Germany, on December 21, 1872, to Ludwig Langescheid and Louise Kuekelhaus. After completing an apprenticeship with a hardware merchant in Muenster, he originally planned to move to South Africa, but the outbreak of the Boer War prompted him to immigrate to America instead. He arrived in Fresno, California, in August 1903, briefly working at a local store before purchasing a forty-acre tract in the Calimyrna Colony on Belmont Avenue to establish his first vineyard.
In November 1905, Carl married Lisette Brocks in Fresno, and together they became active members and leaders of the local German Lutheran Church. After selling his initial property and making a visit back to his native Germany in 1913, he returned to Fresno County to purchase the forty-acre Sanborn place eight miles east of Fresno. He developed this property into a thriving estate planted with muscat, Emperor, and wine grapes alongside alfalfa, while actively supporting the California Associated Raisin Company.
