Kreyenhagen, Hugo
Born at West Point (now Oakland), California, in 1858, Hugo Kreyenhagen was the second-oldest son of Gustav and Julia (Ihering) Kreyenhagen. Educated at the Christian Brothers College in Oakland, he moved at age eighteen to Posa Chene (Turk Station) in Fresno County, where he joined his father and brothers in the livestock, merchandising, and freighting industries along the West Side of the San Joaquin Valley.
As a principal in Kreyenhagens, Inc., Hugo resided on the Canoas Rancho—one of three contiguous family holdings including Zapato Cheno and Los Polvaderos—encompassing 10,000 acres of owned land alongside 33,000 acres of leased range. The enterprise operated extensive cattle-raising and grain-farming operations, maintained stock interests in Arizona’s Hays Cattle Company, and previously owned the Crescent Meat Market in Coalinga. Married in 1883 to Marie Merrill, with whom he had two children (Olga and Ernest Hugo, a World War I veteran of the 144th Field Artillery), Kreyenhagen served as a local school trustee, supported the California Cattle Growers’ Association, and aligned with the Republican Party.
