Kreyenhagen, Emil
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1853, Emil Kreyenhagen was the eldest child of Gustav and Julia (Tiering) Kreyenhagen. In 1854, his family migrated via Panama to California, eventually establishing businesses in Gilroy and Los Banos before settling at Posa Chena (Kirk Station) in Fresno County in 1874–1875. Kreyenhagen was educated at public schools in Gilroy and St. Joseph’s Academy in Oakland, assisting his father with freighting, store operations, and stock-raising from an early age.
Partnering with his brothers, Kreyenhagen served as president of Kreyenhagens, Inc., which grew into one of the largest landholding and livestock enterprises in Fresno County. The corporation owned 10,000 acres across three major ranches—Los Canoas, Zapato Cheno, and Las Polvaderas—while leasing 37,000 additional acres for large-scale cattle operations and grain farming. Kreyenhagen served as postmaster at Turk Station and Rogers, held interests in the Hays Cattle Company and local Coalinga meat markets, and was a member of Welcome Lodge No. 255, F. & A. M., in Lemoore. Married in 1881 to Lucy Hathaway, with whom he had two daughters (Gertrude and Leona M.), Kreyenhagen was widely respected as a foundational pioneer and developer of the San Joaquin Valley.
