Kerner, Carl
Born in Samara, Russia, in 1855, Carl Kerner was raised on his family’s farm, learned wagon-making, and served in the Russian army during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. Inspired by accounts of California’s growth, Kerner emigrated to Fresno in June 1887, becoming one of the earliest Russian settlers in Central California. He worked initially as a carpenter, helping construct the Hughes Hotel and working on local ranches and vineyards.
After acquiring and developing land along McKinley Avenue, Kerner established a 25-acre property planted to Thompson Seedless grapes and peaches. He actively supported local agricultural organizations through memberships in both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc. Married in Russia to Elisa Rudolph, with whom he raised six children—Samuel B., Henry R., Anna, Elizabeth, Letha, and Carl—and an adopted daughter, Mollie Kruse, Kerner achieved a comfortable competency through decades of skilled labor and farming in Fresno County.
