Kerber, Henry
Born near Saratov, Russia, in 1871, Henry Kerber was raised in a German-Russian colony on the Volga River, gaining fluency in both German and Russian. Following his father’s death, he served a four-year apprenticeship as a wagon-maker in Stepnoia, Russia. In 1900, Kerber emigrated to the United States with his family, settling in Fresno, California, where he learned the carpenter’s trade and spent nine years constructing buildings across the Fresno area.
Through industry and frugality, Kerber acquired a 20-acre ranch in the Locan school district, where he constructed his family’s residence and farm buildings while transitioning primarily to viticulture and grape farming. Kerber and his wife raised eight children—Marie, Christina, Henry Jr., Mollie, Lydia, Leah, George, and Albert—and became valued members of their local agricultural and construction community.
