Jorgensen, Hans J.
Born in Fyen, Denmark, in 1865, Hans J. Jorgensen served in the Danish army before emigrating to the United States in 1888 with his wife, Anna K. Hansen. Settling in Fresno County, Jorgensen spent nearly two decades working as a tallyman for the Fresno Flume and Lumber Company while developing agricultural property. He initially improved a 20-acre orchard and vineyard in Wolters Colony, followed by the acquisition and development of a 20-acre ranch in the Helm Colony near Clovis, planted to Malaga, Thompson, and Zinfandel vines.
Following Jorgensen’s death in September 2016, his wife, Anna K. Jorgensen, successfully assumed sole management of the Helm Colony vineyard, maintaining its high production and participation in the California Associated Raisin Company. The couple raised five children—Marie, Julia, Laura, Ellen, and Clarence. A faithful Lutheran, Jorgensen was remembered across Fresno County for his steadfast work ethic, integrity, and devotion to his family.
