Johnson, Robert M.
Born in Saline County, Missouri, in 1848, Robert M. Johnson—famously known throughout the region as “Cousin Bob”—farmed in Missouri and Texas before relocating to Fresno County in 1884. Upon settling at Tollhouse to assist his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Abe Yancey, on their ranch and at the Tollhouse Hotel, Johnson entered the livestock industry and established his stock brand, a capital “P” over a quarter circle.
Over twenty-five years of partnership with the Yancey family, Johnson built up a 1,000-acre mountain stock ranch in the Pine Ridge district, watered by Taylor and Flintlock creeks and complete with farm buildings, fruit orchards, and timberlands. A dedicated member of the California Cattle Growers Association, the Y.M.C.A., and the American Red Cross, “Cousin Bob” earned a reputation across Fresno County for his warm hospitality, integrity, and generous community spirit.
