Johnson, Frank T.
Born near Hanford, Kings County, in 1882, Frank T. Johnson was the youngest of ten children born to Tennessee pioneers Samuel and Elizabeth A. (Brady) Johnson. Raised on family farms near Hanford and Dinuba following his father’s early death in 1883, Johnson learned grain farming and viticulture from a young age. He eventually acquired part of the family homestead, which he developed into a productive peach orchard and Sultana and Thompson Seedless vineyard before selling the property to relocate to Tranquillity in 1909.
At Tranquillity, Johnson acquired raw land that he leveled and checked to alfalfa, building a high-yielding hay ranch that expanded to 125 acres along with a successful dairy operation. Married in Sacramento to Indiana native Effie Maude Shutt, with whom he had three children—Dolores, Eleanor, and Louis—Johnson also briefly improved fruit and olive acreage on Marks and Church avenues before returning to his main Tranquillity estate, earning a reputation as one of Fresno County’s most industrious native sons.
