Johnson, August
Born in Sundsvall, Sweden, in 1857, August Johnson trained as a millwright before emigrating to Wisconsin in 1881. After brief periods working in the lumber mills of the Midwest, Oregon, and Washington, he settled permanently in Fresno County in 1884. Johnson became an active pioneer developer, operating an early well-boring rig, installing windmills, and contracting for nursery cuttings on a massive scale—including a single contract to bud 750,000 Muscat slips.
Over his decades in Fresno County, Johnson bought, improved, and sold several agricultural properties across the Washington Colony, McKinley district, Richland tract, and Valentine Avenue, specializing in Thompson Seedless, Sultana, and Muscat vineyards alongside peach orchards. Married in 1900 to Sweden native Mathilda Carlson, Johnson was a member of the California Associated Raisin Company and the Swedish Mission Church, eventually retiring to the city of Fresno in 1918 after a life marked by agricultural enterprise, brief Alaskan mining pursuits, and active civic involvement.
