Jerry Ryan
Jerry Ryan arrived in Fresno County as a railroad construction labor contractor after serving in the Seventh Texas Cavalry during the Civil War. He had previously built the first railroad in Cuba alongside his father, employing 200 teams before the war disrupted their business. Seeking new opportunities, he migrated to California and chose to settle in the Fresno area because of the superior school facilities promised for his growing family. He located in the region before the historic vote that moved the county seat, witnessing the earliest days of local community development.
Following his work with the railroad, Ryan launched an active business career by establishing the Star Hotel and boarding house at Tulare and H Streets. He expanded his commercial real estate presence by developing the Washington Hotel in May 1876 and later constructing the prominent two-story brick United States Hotel. Throughout his life, he managed several notable local establishments, including the California Hotel and the Arlington House, while accumulating significant wealth through wise real estate investments. Ryan remained a well-known, unassuming local figure until his death, leaving behind a valuable property estate that included the prominent landmark known as Degens Corner.
