Jensen, N. Peter
Born in Fyen, Denmark, in 1877, N. Peter Jensen emigrated to California with his family in 1886, joining his father, Soren Jensen, in West Park, Fresno County. After attending local schools and assisting on his father’s vineyard, Jensen embarked on large-scale grain farming, leasing 2,000 acres from the Bank of Central California. He later transitioned into land-leveling and checking contracts across the Vinland, Empire, and Barstow colonies before purchasing raw land near Barstow, which he successfully developed into alfalfa fields and orchards.
In January 1907, Jensen was appointed road overseer under Supervisor Chris Jorgensen, a position he filled for many years overseeing the construction and maintenance of hundreds of miles of public highways west of Fresno to Kerman and McMullen Station using motorized caterpillar tractors, trucks, and team outfits. Alongside his public infrastructure work, Jensen developed a 40-acre home vineyard near Barstow planted primarily to Thompson Seedless grapes, as well as an additional 40-acre alfalfa ranch. Married in West Park to Iowa native Mary Stahl, Jensen was an active member of the California Associated Raisin Company and a highly esteemed figure in Fresno County civic and agricultural life.
