James, William T.
Born near Elk Lick Springs, Ralls County, Missouri, in 1858, William T. James was the son of Thompson B. James and nephew of the notable California pioneer Jeff James. Reared in Missouri by his grandfather following his parents’ early deaths, James farmed and raised livestock on inherited family land before relocating to Fresno County in 1890. Leasing land from his uncle, he engaged in grain farming and stock raising, eventually establishing an 82-acre ranch in Tranquillity, where he successfully cultivated alfalfa, grain, and raised hogs.
In 1881, James married Elizabeth Watkins in Audrain County, Missouri, with whom he had three sons: William D., Roy L. (who served in the U.S. Naval Reserve), and Jeff G. A Democrat and member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, James earned widespread respect throughout the Tranquillity region as an enterprising, resilient, and public-spirited community member.
