James, Noah E.
Born in Logan County, Illinois, in 1870, Noah E. James came to California with his father, Benjamin F. James, in 1876. After completing his education in Oakland, he trained under his father as a carpenter and contractor, working extensively across Tulare County on major flume and building projects in Porterville, Exeter, and Lindsay. Relocating to Fresno in 1900, James established himself as one of the San Joaquin Valley’s premier builders, contributing to landmark structures such as the Fresno High School machine shop and annex, the Fresno Crematory, and numerous prominent local residences.
In addition to running his own contracting business, James served as construction foreman for several major regional builders and was appointed Fresno County Superintendent of Building Construction by the Board of Supervisors in 1917. Married to Illinois native Ida Lillian Haney, with whom he had eight children, James was also an active leader in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Modern Woodmen of America, and Carpenters’ Union No. 701, earning widespread respect for his contributions to the county’s architectural and civic growth.
